Malefic Throne - The Conquering Darkness (2025)

Malefic Throne is a trio comprising Gene Palubicki (Angelcorpse, Perdition Temple), vocalist & bassist Steve Tucker (Morbid Angel) and drummer John Longstreth (Origin, Hate Eternal, ex-Angelcorpse). The Conquering Darkness is their first album (following an EP). As you can expect, we're talking about old-school US Death metal, rooted in traditions (some moments not only reminds, Angelcorpse and Morbid Angel, but also early Slayer!), but with an intensity that always has characterized the musicians past and present bands and that totally can look modern death metal in the eyes. Good stuff!

Visceral Disgorge - Slithering Evisceration (2019)

Need your fresh dose of brutal death metal? Then I have a treat for you! The new Visceral Disgorge, called Slithering Evisceration, eight years after their first one has everything you will like. It's clear those eight years were not wasted because the new one beats the old. Dense and straight to the point at the same time thanks to the good songwriting, technical enough (the drumming especially), some slam but not too much, good riffing and a good brutal groove. They do the job expertly. Good stuff!

Voidhanger - Dark Days of the Soul (2018)

Dark Days of the Soul is the third album from Polish trio Voidhanger. Their music sounds like a cool mix of Entombed, Marduk, Martyrdod  and Impaled Nazarene, trashy black/death with a healthy dose of d-beat. They keep things simple and straight to the point and they're good at it producing catchy and memorable songs that anyone into this kind of radical metalpunk would dig.

Origin - Omnipresent (2014)

Since more than 15 years ago, Origin means the most intense, dense and technical death metal. Omnipresent, released by Agonia records is their sixth album and carries on the evolution they undertook from Anthitesis, letting more "breathing space" for the listener, with less focus on technical playing and brutality and more on melody and songwriting (although they remain damn brutal and technical!). But on Omnipresent they put aside the more "progressive" elements of Entity in favour of a more direct approach, with shorter and less complex songs. It's probably their album with the more diversity, with fast ragers, melodic and very technical instrumental interludes with amazing guitar work, and even a nearly punk song! Even if it probably won't stay as their most memorable album (but honestly their first ones created such huge shockwaves that the task is very hard for them now to top it…), they did a good job in offering something sounding fresh and new while keeping their trademark style. Looks like they just can't do wrong!

Spektr - cypher (2013)

Spektr is a french black metal duo, another excellent french black metal band daring to experiment and excelling at it! last year they released their third full lenght calld cypher (with Agonia records, a label very strong on black metal of experimental varieties). Cypher is all about developping the mysterious side of black metal darkness (if you're looking for some brutal raw assault, look elswhere), by means of mostly instrumental tracks with industrial elements (some subtle noise or also free / fusion jazz sampling, like the evil hidden side of Miles Davis Bitches brew) it creates some fascinating black metal sonic travels. A record that lures you and let you sink deeply into it. A unique experience and one of the best and most original black metal album of last year (while being a lot more than just black metal). The more I listen to it, the more I think it's really a superb masterpiece.
