Altarage - Succumb (2021)

Another great album from Altarage, maybe not as good as the previous one (the songs are less memorable), but still likely to make it to my "best of death metal" in the end of the year. They stil sound like somewhere between modern bands like Ulcerate/Portal and Morbid Angel (especially the atmosphere of crawling heaviness of the Gateway album), but went a step further into death/doom territory, culminating in a drone/doom logn track in the end. They also included a bit of noise/industrial sound, which works well within their music.

Mainliner - Dual Myths (2021)

Mainliner is a Japanese psychedelic/free rock trio with Kawabata Makoto on guitar (he's Acid Mothers Temple leader) and two other experienced musicians from the Japanese psych scene (Taigen Kawabe on bass and Shimura Koji on the drums) eight years after the previous one Dual Myth is their new album, released by the awesome Riot Season Records. The four long tracks are on the most rocking, heavier, noisy and abrasive side of psych rock, for a very convincing result. Recommended!

Andrew Nolan - Black Creek (2021)

Black Creek is a solo album from Andrew Nolan (ex The Endless Blockade and Column of Heaven). It could be described as industrial noise dub, and could remind the works of Mick Harris, Kevin Martin and Justin Broadrick. Trippy and dreamy and vaguely menacing and bizarre soundscapes. Excellent stuff.

Needful Things / Controlled Existence - Split LP(2021)

Good split LP between two Czech grindcore bands, Needful Things and Controlled Existence on the excellent Psychocontrol Records (a label with guys playing in Needful Things), for both bands it's a last recording with their current vocalist. Both bands are on the old school side of grind, but with a quite modern sound for Needful Things. Both are doing well in this enjoyable split in the pure grind tradition.

Ulcerate - Stare Into Death And Be Still (2020)

I should have reviewed an Ulcerate album a long time ago, I'm correcting this with their last one (from last year) Stare Into Death And Be Still. I knew their previous stuff, but couldn't really get into it, maybe because of the atmospheric nature of their music, quite unusual in death metal. I don't know, but anyway I was wrong! I should have paid more attention, but now I will do! They are great at creating an ominous feel of grandeur and sounds like a mix of Immolation and Neurosis, but more technical (awesome drumming especially, maybe not so technical in execution but very smart in the songwriting, always perfectly fitting the music). You probably already know it's good but if not you really should give it a try (and not just superficially like I used to!)

Youth Code & King Yosef - A Skeleton Key in the Doors of Depression (2021)

A Skeleton Key in the Doors of Depression is a collaborative album between industrial metal/EBM duo Youth Code and King Yosef (see previous post). It's an interesting and enjoyable album mixing old school and new sound, some tracks sounds more like Youth Code but with King Yosef alternating with YC's Sara Taylor on vocals whereas other tracks sounds a bit like NIN's Pretty hate machine colliding with early Korn. And why not?

King Yosef - Guilty (EP 2018)

I discovered King Yosef with his collaboration with Youth Code (that I will soon review). He's producing hip-hop/trap music (and is also in a hardcore metal band) but, even if there's a trap element in this EP (called Guilty and released in 2018), I'd say it actually has most of the time a pure sound from the nineties, reminds the beginnings of Korn and Slipknot, "old-school nu-metal" if I dare say, even also a bit of Prodigy (the jungle/big beat loops). Kind of stuff I was listening too before moving on to death/black/grind. Maybe because of that I enjoy this EP. Like everything nu-metal related it's bordering "bad taste" but he's doing it right. Let's say it's a good "guilty pleasure".

K2 / Yasuhito Fujinami - Split cassette (2017)

Good split cassette released by two Japanese noise artists in 2017. Three tracks from Yasuhito Fujinami on the first side, the whole spectrum of noise going from ambient to harsh, rich and subtle, really good. On the other side is K2 (noise veteran Kimihide Kusafuka) with a long track more on the harsh side of noise, not the monolithic and dull kind, it has enough twists and turns and variations to keep your attention and build an interesting listening experience.

Mythic Sunship - Wildfire (2021)

On this new album, aptly called Wildfire (their first with Tee Pee records), Mythic Sunship keep on pushing back their earlier slow and heavy, stoner, element, but this time not in favour of a sax driven spiritual jazz feel, but for faster more guitar driven songs, giving to the album a more krautrock vibe. What doesn't change is the quality of their music. Another good album for the psych rock Danish band.

WRØNG - Snapping the Bones to Make the Limbs Bend (2021)

I'm discovering WRØNG with this album Snapping the Bones to Make the Limbs Bend, but they released plenty of music since 2014, and I regret being late to the party. I listened to their discography all day long yesterday, and I like each and every of their releases. WRØNG is a noisegrind/powerviolence bass/drum duo (with vocals by both musicians) from Australia, even with these limited elements they manage to write a large variety of different songs thanks to their songwriting skills and inventiveness. And as could be expected from a noisegrind drum/bass duo (sometimes venturing into sludge territory) it has the heaviness and groove, the speed and the impact, the noise and the fury. Highly recommended!

Ulthar - Providence (2020)

I preferred Ulthar's first album "Cosmovore", with its weird somewhat voivodian atmospheres, but Providence, with its evolution towards more epic feels (a few songs even reminds Immortal!) is also an interesting and solid piece of old school but personal death metal. Quality stuff.

Drumcorps - Better Days (2021)

Better Days
is in my opinion the best release from Drumcorps, having the radicality and impact of "Grist" (the frst album from 2006) but less samples-based and with a more condensed and better songwriting, while the melodic/shoegazy element that appeared on "Falling Forward" is feature in the Better Days song, with a good result. And if you don't know yet Drumcorps it is an Aron Spectre project mixing breakcore and metal, jungle loops and beats and hm-2 guitars and blast beats. Aaron Spectre is also doing the vocals for the first time (it's not sampled vocals any more). Cyber grind? junglecore? Grindbreak? Drum & grind? Has been tried before but rarely so successfully. Recommended!

Vile Species - Vile Species (2020)

First album (self titled) from the Greek band Vile Species delivering some cool old-school grind-punk, just the way I like it. Now I have to check the split they just released with Human Obliteration, I suppose it's good as well...

DJ Muggs & Rome Streetz - Death & The Magician (2021)

One of the many recent collaborative albums with DJ Muggs, this time with Rome Streetz whose relentless fast flow contrast with the old school laid back and soulful and/or dark tracks from Cypress Hill producer. So far the best of the three album Muggs already released in 2021. Quality stuff.

Pekko Käppi & K:H:H:L - Matilda (2017)

Pekko Käppi is a jouhikko player (a jouhikko is a Finnish string instrument) and an ethnomusicologist, and joined with his band K:H:H:L he produces a music hard to describe, that's why, despite liking it instantly (the opening track is really awesome with its screaming riff à la Hendrix, somewhat), it took me four years to review their second album Matilda. They play some psychedelic folk rock rooted in Finnish traditional music (and sung in Finnish) but with also hard rock elements and even bits of funk. Very "exotic" and also enjoyable. Interesting and cool stuff. Not surprisingly it  (like their more recent album from 2019) is released by the excellent Svart records, specialized in all kinds of weird Finnish music.

Human Impact - EP01 (2021)

One year after Human Impact (Chris Spencer from Unsane and guys from Cop Shoot Cop and Swans  : Jim Coleman, Chris Pravdica and Phil Puleo) debut album (that I reviewed HERE) here's the EP01, a gathering of previously released songs in singles and B sides, same quality as the material on the album, so expect high class noise rock.

In the Company of Serpents - LUX (2020)

LUX, the fourth album of In the Company of Serpents is a superb slice of doom metal, with moments reminding High on Fire during the most rocking/uptempo parts, and Earth during the more quiet parts. Overall it is heavy and majestic, like any real doom album should be.

Kurushimi - Chaos Remains (2021)

Chaos Remains, the third album from Kurushimi, (I reviewed their first one HERE) is another nice piece of instrumental saxophone driven free-jazz mixed with noise-rock and dub (John Zorn's Naked City being obviously their main influence). This time two long tracks among short ones, with more quiet moments alternating with more noisy ones. Good stuff.

Global Horror - Welcome to your Life (2020)

First album from this French band called Global Horror and it's a very good start in an old-school grind-punk vein. Welcome to your Life and it's ten tracks for around ten minutes has everything is needed for a good grind album. I'll be following them.

Хоп’a’jazza – Road To Hell (2021)

Discovered Road To Hell by Хоп’a’jazza (from Russia) by chance, tried it because of the name and cover art. And I'm glad I did because it's my best hip-hop discovery for maybe a couple of years. Mostly instrumental, with boom-bap beats, jazzy samples and elements of abstract hip-hop (reminds a bit DJ Krush when he was good). Highly recommended.

GR - The GR Record Head (2020)

GR is back with his fifth album called The GR Record Head. The French acid rocker still produce an excellent raw and psychedelic garage rock inspired by the 60'. His music could remind Ian F. Svennonius, but more savage and trippy. Cool stuff.

Eyehategod - A History of Nomadic Behavior (2021)

On A History of Nomadic Behavior, the new Eyehategod album, the more civilized production can be a bit disturbing, but the Black Sab' meets Black Flag meets the blues riffs are quick to make the Eyehategod listener feels at home. A slightly more tidy home, but still home, definitely. Good vocals from Mike Williams also.

Paladin - Ascension (2019)

Ascension is a brilliant first album from Paladin, totally over the top heavy speed power thrash metal (you get the idea!). Technical and aggressive but also with excellent songwriting skills, this is a full speed riffing/shredding fest, with vocals that goes from traditionnal heavy metal to a bit of growling. Pladin reminds a less cheesy (and without keyboards) Dragonforce, or bands like Blind Guardian, Brainstorm, or Nevermore. Highly recommended!

Yinn - Concord Obsolete (2020)

Don't know much about Yinn, probably coming from Latin America since it's released by Columbian labels (this one by Healed Wounds, sometimes Mephyst). But actually the most important thing to know is that Concord Obsolete is 3 tracks of efficient and finely crafted dark and hardcore techno : good beats over subtle and good synths/sounds for the dark atmosphere.

BowelFuck - Decades (2020)

Discovered Bowelfuck with their previous album Fragments (2017) that I really liked, the new one, their third, Decades, released last year is  another excellent piece of grindcore, somewhere between the old school and bands like Nasum or Rotten Sound, on the more grind-punk side of grindcore. Cool stuff.

Sleaford Mods - Spare Ribs (2021)

Spare Ribs is the new album from Sleaford Mods, and it's as good as usual. Maybe it could be described as minimalistic and digital post-punk, Jason Williamson doing the vocals (punk with a bit of a hip-hop flow) and Andrew Fearn doing the beats, synths, basslines and guitar riffs. It's not the desperate or melancholic kind of post-punk, but a sarcastic and pissed off one. Like on the Viagra Boys new album there's also a cool duo with Amy Taylor singer of Amyl and The Sniffers. Recommended stuff.

Gatecreeper - An Unexpected Reality (EP 2020)

With this EP called An Unexpected Reality, Gatecreeper don't go for their usual old school swedeath/hardcore crossover and on side A they delivers shorter and faster songs getting closer to deathgrind, while on side B they get slower and more melodic for a classical death/doom song. I really enjoy side A, but side B is good as well. Wasn't that much into their previous albums but really like this EP. Good stuff.
